Who we are

MathSense Consulting was founded to help administrators and teachers effectively implement inquiry-based math learning while partnering to support this instructional approach.

We believe that math education is most effective when:

Students are engaged in problem-solving, sense-making, and inquiry
Number sense and critical thinking are developed concurrent with skills
Teachers are prepared to serve as facilitators of student-driven discourse
Parents are informed about math curriculum and equipped to support their children at home

About our founders

Amy Hand

Co-Founder

Amy Hand has nearly twenty years of experience teaching elementary through college level math and is currently the Middle School Division Head at Hillbrook School in California. Prior to that, Amy served as Math Department Head at The Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn and Trinity School in Manhattan. Amy earned her undergraduate degrees in Mathematics and Philosophy from Colgate University, her Masters in Mathematics Teaching from the University of New Hampshire, and her Masters in Education from Columbia University. Her love for mathematics began with her interest in logic puzzles and card games as a kid, grew as she studied math in school, and became a passion when she started her career as a middle school math teacher.

Amy stays excited about math by working on puzzle problems with colleagues, following inspirational math educators and mathematicians on Twitter, writing and developing math curriculum, working with dedicated teachers, and being challenged every day by her own math students.

Allyson Rohrbach

Co-Founder

Allyson Rohrbach has been a mathematics educator, coach, and leader for the past fifteen years and is currently a Math Coach with The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools. Earlier in her career, she served as Middle School Math Coordinator at The Packer Collegiate Institute in New York City and as a mathematics teacher at Louisville High School and in the Kern High School District in California. As an educational leader, she has extensive experience analyzing and improving curricula to ensure that strong conceptual understandings and cohesive vertical progressions exist throughout grades and supporting teachers in improving their instruction in the classroom.

Allyson earned her undergraduate degree in Mathematics and Economics from the University of California at Los Angeles and her Masters in Education from California State University at Northridge. Allyson started her career in education after observing several teacher-driven, lecture-based mathematics classes, which inspired her to make a difference in the way students learn mathematics. She remains determined to engage students in discourse about the “why” of mathematics more than the “how.” She is dedicated to addressing equity in education by empowering both teachers and students to become more confident mathematical thinkers and learners. Allyson is passionate about helping teachers implement an instructional approach that allows students to see mathematics everywhere.
